“Core” and “Extended” identify different assessment routes within some Cambridge IGCSE Science syllabuses, with different content demands, papers and available grade ranges. A tutor therefore needs the student’s exact subject, syllabus code, route and examination year before planning lessons.
In 1999, NASA engineers waited for the Mars Climate Orbiter to re-establish communication after it passed behind Mars. The signal never returned. The investigation chaired by Arthur Stephenson later traced the loss to a mismatch between measurement systems: one team had supplied data in US customary units while another part of the system expected metric units.
Both teams understood spacecraft navigation. The failure occurred because a critical specification did not match.
The label “IGCSE Science” leaves out essential information

Which Cambridge syllabus is the student taking? What is the syllabus code? Is the student entered for Core or Extended? Which examination series and year apply? Which papers will the student sit?
Core and Extended routes exist because students are assessed at different levels of demand. Extended typically includes the Core material plus additional content and more demanding application. The assessment papers also differ, and the chosen route affects the grades available to the candidate.
The precise structure depends on the subject, syllabus and examination year. That caveat matters. Families and tutors should use the current syllabus document and the student’s confirmed entry information rather than rely on what applied to an older sibling or a previous class.
Route choice changes what a tutor should teach
A general subject search can produce a tutor who knows Chemistry. Curriculum-specific matching asks whether that tutor can prepare this student for the correct Cambridge Chemistry route.
For a Core student, effective tuition should concentrate on secure understanding of the specified Core content, accurate use of scientific language, practical skills and the question formats found in the relevant papers. For an Extended student, stopping at Core coverage leaves examinable material untouched. Lessons may need to address more complex relationships, calculations, unfamiliar contexts and multi-step reasoning, depending on the syllabus. The tutor should also understand how the student’s papers distribute knowledge, application and practical skills.
This affects diagnosis. - The confirmed Core or Extended route, where the syllabus offers both.

Those few characters can determine what gets taught, which papers receive attention and whether each paid lesson prepares the student for the examination they will actually sit.
