A polished AI study plan can still send a teenager towards the wrong digital SAT skills. Before practice begins, compare the plan with the current College Board test structure, the student’s actual results, and the version of the exam they will take.
In 1999, NASA’s Mars Climate Orbiter reached Mars after a journey of hundreds of millions of kilometres. On September 23, the spacecraft passed behind the planet. Mission controllers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena expected contact to resume. It never did.
The specification mismatch that cost a spacecraft
The problem was eventually traced to a mismatch between two measurement systems. Software supplied by Lockheed Martin produced thruster data in pound-seconds, while NASA’s navigation software expected newton-seconds. The values moved through sophisticated systems, shaped real decisions, and looked usable. They still described the spacecraft’s motion in incompatible units.
NASA’s Mars Climate Orbiter Mishap Investigation Board documented the failure in its 1999 Phase I report. The report found that the mismatch contributed to an incorrect trajectory and the loss of the spacecraft.
The lesson reaches well beyond engineering. A plan can be detailed, orderly, and technically impressive while following the wrong specification.
That is the risk a parent faces when an AI tool produces a week-by-week SAT schedule filled with practice blocks, topic labels, and confident explanations. The document may look ready to use. Its appearance cannot confirm that it matches the digital SAT.
Check the test before trusting the plan
The first check should be the exam format. The digital SAT has Reading and Writing and Math sections, delivered through the College Board’s Bluebook application. Each section uses two modules, and performance in the first module influences the difficulty of the second.
An AI-generated plan should reflect that structure. If it treats the SAT as a paper exam, separates reading from writing using an older format, or builds practice around obsolete question types, stop before the student spends an afternoon completing it.
Next, inspect the source material behind the plan. Ask which current College Board specifications, question categories, and official practice resources it follows. A vague assurance that the schedule is “SAT aligned” gives a parent little to verify. The plan should connect each practice task to a recognisable skill and explain why that skill deserves attention.
Then compare the schedule with the teenager’s evidence. Recent Bluebook practice results, schoolwork, teacher feedback, and patterns in completed questions can reveal where time is being lost. A student who struggles with transitions in Reading and Writing needs a different plan from one who understands the content but rushes the second Math module.

Turn a generic schedule into a student-specific plan
Once the curriculum check is complete, examine the order of practice. A useful plan should identify a small number of current priorities, provide suitable practice, review errors, and adjust the next session accordingly.
Look for evidence of three things:
- The tasks match the current digital SAT rather than a previous test format.
- The schedule responds to the student’s demonstrated gaps instead of dividing time evenly across every topic.
- Timed practice includes the screen navigation and tool use the student will encounter in Bluebook.
That final point matters. Knowing how to solve a question and managing it inside a timed digital test are related but different demands. Students may need practice moving through modules, using the available tools, and deciding when to flag a question for review.
