A calm Sunday-night curriculum triage takes 30 minutes: confirm what is known, list what still needs an answer, then choose the subjects that need attention before Monday. The result should be a short plan based on evidence, rather than a complete overhaul of the week.

Consider an illustrative family in Accra. At 8:34 on Sunday evening, Ama is standing at the dining table with her son Kojo’s school portal open on a laptop, two marked papers beside it, and a message about an upcoming assessment on her phone. Kojo says Chemistry is the problem. The portal appears to show a Mathematics task due soon, while an English assignment has no visible feedback.

Ama has half an hour before she needs to prepare for Monday. If she treats every concern as urgent, Kojo may spend the evening switching between three subjects and still miss the task with the clearest deadline. If she trusts memory alone, the Mathematics submission could remain buried in the portal.

She draws three columns on a sheet of paper: confirmed, unanswered, attention. That small division changes the evening.

Minutes 0 to 10: Record only confirmed facts

Start with material you can see. Open the school portal, recent teacher messages, the student’s timetable, marked work, and any assessment schedule provided by the school. Record facts without interpreting them yet.

Ama writes:

  • Mathematics task appears on the portal with a submission date.
  • Chemistry paper has several corrections in one topic.
  • English assignment was submitted, but no feedback is visible.

Notice what she leaves out. “Kojo is falling behind” is a conclusion. “Chemistry is getting worse” is an impression. Both may deserve attention, but neither belongs in the confirmed column until there is evidence behind it.

Curriculum details matter here. A Cambridge IGCSE paper, an IB MYP classroom task, and an AP assignment may play different roles in a student’s programme. Check the exact subject, level, component, and teacher instruction before deciding what a score or task means. Keep this stage factual and brief. You are building a reliable picture, not diagnosing the entire term.

Minutes 10 to 20: Turn uncertainty into answerable questions

Move every gap into the unanswered column. Phrase each one so that a teacher, tutor, or student can answer it clearly.

Ama replaces “What is happening with English?” with “Has the English assignment been marked, and where will the feedback appear?” She replaces “Is Chemistry now the weakest subject?” with “Do the recent errors come from one topic, or do they appear across several topics?”

Useful questions often concern:

  • the exact deadline or assessment date
  • the syllabus topic or assessment component involved
  • whether work is missing, submitted, or awaiting feedback
  • which correction the student does not understand
  • whether a low mark reflects knowledge, timing, instructions, or incomplete work
  • what the teacher expects the student to prepare next

Assign each unanswered question a next source. Kojo can check his exercise book for the Chemistry topic. Ama can review the original Mathematics instruction. A question about English feedback can wait for a concise message to the school on Monday.

Minutes 20 to 27: Choose attention by consequence

Use the final column for subjects requiring action. Rank them by consequence and immediacy, using the confirmed facts you have.

A subject deserves attention before Monday when there is a near deadline, a lesson requiring preparation, an unresolved error that blocks the next topic, or a clear pattern in recent work. A general feeling of worry belongs lower down until evidence supports it.

For Ama and Kojo, the Mathematics task comes first because a visible submission date creates a concrete consequence. Chemistry comes next because Kojo has a Monday lesson and can identify one correction he wants explained. English stays on the question list because the work has already been submitted and no immediate action is confirmed.

Minutes 27 to 30: Write Monday’s smallest useful plan

Finish with three actions at most. Each action should name the subject, the task, and when it will happen.

Ama’s plan reads:

  • Kojo will check and submit the Mathematics task tonight.
  • He will mark the unclear Chemistry correction and take it to Monday’s lesson.
  • Ama will send one focused question about the missing English feedback on Monday morning.

At 9:04, the laptop still shows several tabs, and Chemistry still needs work. The difference is concrete: the Mathematics deadline is covered, Kojo knows what to ask in Chemistry, and English has a named next step. Ama places the three-column sheet beside his school bag, where Monday’s questions will be harder to forget.
