Why Do We Lose Marks When the Working Is Right?

A Cambridge Checkpoint mark scheme rewards two different kinds of marks: method marks for showing the working, and accuracy marks for producing the right final answer. Most parents are never told that these are scored separately, and the distinction is often the difference between a child who understands the material and a child who gets the marks on paper.

Adjoa had watched her daughter Ama come home with a string of 70-something percent scores on Cambridge Checkpoint practice papers. The revision timetable was colour-coded and pinned to the kitchen wall. Ama was working through past papers every evening, and the answers at the back looked right. Neither of them could understand why the marks did not follow.

The turning point came on a Thursday evening in Accra. Ama had just finished a Science paper and was marking it herself, circling a small set of wrong final answers. "I only missed three questions," she said, with the calm of someone who had already done the hard part. Her mother looked at the paper and noticed something odd. The circle at the end of each working line was wrong, but the lines above it were not. Ama had shown the correct method all the way down to the final step, then stumbled on the arithmetic. She was treating the exercise as a test of right answers rather than a test of demonstrated method.

Method marks reward the journey

Checkpoint examiners are trained to award method marks for the steps that lead toward an answer, even when the final number is wrong. A student who sets out the correct equation, substitutes the right values, and then makes a slip in the final calculation will usually keep the marks for everything up to that slip. The working is the evidence that the student understands the process. The accuracy mark is a separate reward for landing the final value on the nose.

This is a hard idea for many students to absorb because it changes what revision means. A child who only checks final answers learns that a wrong number is a failure. A child who understands method marks learns that a wrong number carries information: the method held, and one specific step broke. That is a much more useful message for the next paper.

Accuracy marks reward the finish

The accuracy mark sits at the end of the working. It is the reward for giving the answer the examiner expects, in the form the question asks for. A student can lose this mark for reasons that have nothing to do with understanding: forgetting a unit, leaving a fraction unsimplified, giving three decimal places when the question asked for two. These are not signs of a weak student. They are signs of a student who has not been taught to treat the final line as a separate skill.

The practical habit is to read the question stem for its instruction to "write your answer to two decimal places" or "give your answer in kilometres per hour." The method can be flawless and the answer still loses the accuracy mark for presenting the right number in the wrong wrapping.

What this changes in practice

Back in the kitchen, Adjoa printed the mark scheme for the paper Ama had just done and worked through it line by line, awarding the method marks separately before even looking at the final answers. On that Thursday paper, Ama had lost more marks to method slips she had not noticed than to genuine misunderstandings. The working she had shown was incomplete in places where she had skipped a step she assumed was obvious. The examiner could not award a method mark for a step that was not written down.

For a parent reviewing a marked paper, the question to ask is not only "is the answer right?" It is "where did the method break down, and where did the presentation cost a mark?" That single shift reframes a disappointing score as a map of exactly what to practise next, which is the kind of specific, structured feedback that turns a generic subject session into a conversation about this student's paper. A good tutor reads a mark scheme the way an examiner does, and that is the difference between adding more hours and adding more marks.
