In 1962, astronaut John Glenn was preparing to orbit Earth aboard Friendship 7. NASA’s new electronic computers had calculated his trajectory, but Glenn wanted mathematician Katherine Johnson to check the figures by hand before he flew. NASA’s account records his request plainly: if Johnson confirmed the numbers, he was ready to proceed.
That check did not replace the mission plan. It tested a critical assumption before the commitment became irreversible.
Families face a quieter version of that decision after IGCSE results arrive. A student may already be imagining Boston, New York, or California. Before choosing tests, subjects, or tutoring hours, someone needs to check the route.
Start with the destination, even when it is provisional
IGCSE results provide useful evidence about subject strengths, consistency, and areas requiring support. They do not determine a complete US application strategy.
