The Three Exercise Books Waiting for Daniel, and the Subject Choices They Could Protect

A disappointing result can come from missing knowledge, weak exam technique, or shaken confidence. The next term’s subject list helps separate these causes, so each subject gets the support plan it actually needs.

Consider an illustrative composite. At 8:15 on a Sunday evening in Accra, Adwoa sat at the dining table with her son Daniel’s results sheet, next term’s subject list, and a half-finished mug of tea. His mathematics and physics marks had dropped, while English remained steady. Classes would resume soon, and another weak term could narrow his subject choices.

Daniel had already decided what the results meant: “I’m bad at maths.” His mother wondered whether he needed more lessons in every subject. Neither conclusion identified what had gone wrong.

Start with the pattern across subjects

A single low mark gives little diagnostic information. The pattern across several subjects says more.

Adwoa placed Daniel’s next-term subjects beside his recent scripts and school reports. Three different patterns appeared.

In mathematics, he left questions blank when they depended on algebra introduced earlier in the year. That pointed towards a knowledge gap. New topics would build on material he could not yet use reliably.

In physics, Daniel often chose the correct principle but lost marks while arranging calculations and presenting units. He appeared to understand much of the content. His difficulty lay in applying that knowledge under assessment conditions, which suggested a technique problem.

English showed a different picture. His classwork remained consistent, yet he had become reluctant to contribute after one poor timed assignment. More content teaching would miss the immediate barrier. He needed carefully graded practice that could help him trust his preparation again.

Match each cause to a different plan

A knowledge gap calls for reconstruction. Begin by identifying the earliest missing idea, then rebuild from there before the next topic adds another layer.

For Daniel, that meant returning to the algebra used inside his new mathematics units. Repeating the latest chapter would have kept him busy without repairing the foundation. A useful plan would check prerequisite knowledge, teach the missing steps, and use short practice sets to confirm that he could apply them without prompts.

A technique problem requires a different kind of work. In physics, Daniel needed to practise interpreting questions, selecting a method, setting out calculations, checking units, and reviewing where marks were lost. This is where looking closely at one answer can reveal more than assigning another page of general revision. Confidence needs evidence, not reassurance alone. Daniel could begin with a task he was ready to complete, explain his reasoning aloud, and then attempt a slightly harder timed question. The aim would be to create a sequence of genuine successes while still correcting mistakes honestly.

These plans can overlap. A student may lose confidence because missing knowledge has made every lesson feel unpredictable. Another may know the material but freeze after repeatedly running out of time. The important step is to identify which barrier should be addressed first.

Use next term’s list as a planning document

The subject list turns diagnosis into a practical sequence. For each course, ask what the student will soon be expected to know, produce, or complete under time pressure.

Then compare those demands with current evidence:

  • Which upcoming topics depend on knowledge the student has not secured?
  • Which subjects show correct understanding but weak written execution?
  • Where has participation, persistence, or willingness to attempt questions changed?
  • Which subjects are stable and need no extra intervention?

That final question matters. Support should be focused. Adding tuition across every subject can crowd the week, reduce independent study time, and make the student feel that the entire report is a crisis.

Families navigating Cambridge, IB, or US pathways should also check that the support matches the actual curriculum and stage. “Mathematics tutoring” is too broad when the student needs help with a particular IGCSE topic, an IB assessment demand, or a digital SAT question type.
