A fluent ChatGPT explanation can make an SAT question feel understood because every step appears logical once it is visible. The real test is whether the student can rebuild that reasoning alone, under time pressure, inside the digital SAT.
Consider Maya, an invented composite student preparing from Accra. At 8:17 on a Thursday evening, she was leaning over her laptop with a half-finished mug of milky tea beside the trackpad. ChatGPT had explained a difficult algebra question in six tidy steps. Maya read the answer twice, nodded, and said, “That’s actually easy.”
Then she opened a similar practice question without the explanation.
The numbers had changed. The wording was less familiar. After two minutes, she had written three equations and crossed out all of them. If this happened repeatedly on test day, she could lose time for questions she knew how to answer. Fluency can create a false sense of mastery

The digital SAT adds decisions beyond the maths

Preparation should therefore include the conditions that expose those gaps:
- Close the explanation and solve the same question from a blank page.
- State the first decision before doing any calculation.
- Try a related question with different wording or values.
- Practise in the official digital environment when appropriate.
- Record the reason for each error, such as misreading, method choice, calculation, or time management.
Families should also check that a study plan fits the student’s present curriculum and starting point. Turn an AI explanation into active practice
With three practice evenings left before her next timed session, Maya changed one habit. After asking for an explanation, she closed it and wrote three short prompts on paper:
“What clue starts the solution?”
“Why does this method fit?”
“What would change if the question changed?”
The first attempt was uncomfortable. She stared at the blank page for long enough to wonder whether she had understood anything at all. That doubt mattered. It revealed the precise point where fluent reading had been doing the work for her.
She reopened the explanation only far enough to check the first decision, then closed it again. On the next question, she named the structure before touching the calculator. On the third, she noticed that a familiar-looking method would produce unnecessary work.

Parents do not need to ban ChatGPT from SAT study. They need a better test for whether an explanation has become usable knowledge.
